When the lights are turned back on the box is gone, and the district attorney has a knife in his back and is quite dead. The police and the coroner arrive. There are several attempts made on the life of the coroner. Ruth Whitman is found hiding in a grandfather-clock, holding the gem box. She claims the box was pushed into her hands and she was pushed into the clock. The district attorney's butler/valet tells the coroner he saw who killed his employer and a few minutes later he is also murdered. The mystery deepens.

Just as he arrives home from an all-night party, he is paid a visit by his fiancée (Jacqueline), her father (General de Latour), and her mother; and with the help of his efficient valet, Joseph, he receives them properly. To appease the general, Edward sends word to his women friends that he is to be married; he goes to a modiste's to bid farewell to Henriette, Joseph's wife, and is discovered by the valet, who thereupon gives him notice. Edward and Jacqueline are married, and following a houseparty, he gambles heavily with Dufour, but the vengeful valet slips an ace up Edward's sleeve, causing him to be accused of cheating. When Joseph hears the shot with which Edward supposedly wipes out his disgrace, his loyalty moves him to confess; Marignan and his wife are then happily reunited.
