TORME SINGS TORME: A 100th BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY MEL TORME
September 13 @ 3:00 pm
Steve Torme will host a one-of-a-kind concert event: Tormé Sings Tormé, a centennial tribute to the legendary Mel Tormé, led by his son, acclaimed performer, Steve March-Tormé. Mel Tormé—nicknamed “The Velvet Fog” for his smooth, effortless vocal tone—was one of the most accomplished and versatile artists of the 20th century. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Tormé’s career spanned more than six decades as a singer, composer, arranger, drummer, actor, and author. He first gained national attention in the 1940s with hits like “Blue Moon” and “Careless Hands,” and became a leading figure in jazz and popular music throughout the 1950s and beyond. His impact on American music is profound: He helped shape the sound of vocal jazz with his inventive phrasing and impeccable timing, and his collaborations with arranger Marty Paich and his Dek-Tette set a new standard for small group jazz orchestration. Perhaps most famously, he co-wrote “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),”which has become one of the most beloved holiday songs of all time. Now, in celebration of what would have been Mel Tormé’s 100th birthday, Steve March-Tormé brings that legacy to life onstage. Tormé Sings Tormé is more than a concert—it’s a deeply personal tribute, blending live music, rare archival video, behind-the-scenes family photos, and intimate stories that only a son can share. Backed by a 10-piece all-star band and using the original arrangements of Marty Paich, Steve March-Tormé will perform the music that defined an era, all while offering a behind-the-curtain look at one of America’s most enduring musical figures.
